Ribbons Plus a Cool Toy from the OC Fair
/Vegan Puff Pastry Pizza Rolls, 1st Place and Division Win, 2014 Orange County Fair, Fairtastic Foods Competition (Finger Foods)
Susan wasn’t able to compete in the main Culinary competition at this year’s Orange County Fair because the turn-in time coincided with our trip to Japan (she won some ribbons at the San Diego County Fair to make up for it!). But the OC Fair holds various other side competitions as well, the last of which was this past weekend – “Fairtastic Foods”. This was a competition for “fair-friendly” food that you might see in a booth one day.
Susan entered, and came back with a 3rd place for her Mushroom Pecan Burger with Caramelized Balsamic Onions, and... a 1st place and Division Win for her Puff Pastry Pizza Rolls!
And of course, this was all Vegan food, against non-Vegan competition! Furthermore, this was a competition for fair food. Fair food normally includes stuff like bacon-covered, deep-fried sticks of butter, etc., so her win was even more remarkable.

For the Pizza Rolls, in addition to her 1st Place and Division Winner ribbons, she got a nice goodie bag. And among other things in the bag was perhaps the coolest prize she’s ever won in a food competition – a stuffed toy which can only be described as a Darwin Transitional Animal. See photo below. We love this thing!
